Overview of the first book (what happened)
The first book in a series is always important, it needs to be good, no exceptional to make people want to read on and read the rest of the series and that is exactly what Sara Shepard (authour of the books) has done, the first book is amazing but i find and think that is it is completelly different to the TV series as the producers had to change the story line to attract more viewers, like the fact that Aria and Ezra weren't meant to last that long, half way through the first season at the most but the audience fell in love with them and said they would stop watching if they broke them up so soon so now they have carried on till the end of season 3, and they have had their fair shares of ups and downs and it dosn't look good for Ezria as Marline King has said that Aria will move on!!! (Crying)
So here is what happened in the first book, titled Pretty little liars
- The story starts of by introducing the girls:
- Alison DiLaurentis, the kind, perfect yet manipulative queen bee, who chose her friends carefully, the most popular person in rosewood high. She is cruel yet makes each girl feel special individually and leads them into a false sense of secuturity, she wears designer clothing and is always in with the trends.
- Aria Montgommery, the independent, artistic one of the group, she is considered different and a bit wierd by the rest of rosewood, she has a quirky dress sense and is good at understanding and forgiving, she is burdened with many secrets which people trust her to keep as she is extremelly trustworthy and feels guilty easily and just wants to protect the people she loves and fix there problems which A uses to her advantage.
- Emily Fields, who has secret feelings for Alison, she is the 'Jock' of the group and is on the school swim team, her parents are extremelly strict and her father is in the army coming to and from afghanastan.
- Hanna Marin, who strives in life to be thin and popular like Alison, which her mum trys her best to help her. She suffers from bulima after Alison made her feel special and then manipulated her and showed her, helped her to make herself through up. She trys to have the latest designer clothing, she loves shopping.
- Spencer Hastings, is an over achiever whos parents think they can fix all the problems with money, which they have a lot of. Her parents seem like the perfect, do no wrong parents but in actual fact her father had a son Jason with Alisons mum, but everyone believes that Jason is Alisons full brother. Spencers dress sense could be described as London Study Girl, always wearing clothes that make her look smart. She is the only one strong enough to stand up to Alison.
- Alison goes missing during a sleepover with the all the girls, in Spencers barn, in her backgarden/yard in the summer before 8th grade.
- The story then jumps to three years later, where the girls are now living their own lifes and don't speak to each other anymore. Aria returns from a three year sabbatical to Iceland with her family (1 year in the TV series). She comes back much more prim and sophisticated then when she left. She meets and makes out with a guy in the toilet of the local bar who turns out to be her english teacher, Ezra Fitz. The book then goes to Emily who has befriended the new girl in town Maya St. Germain, she soon develops romantic feelings for Maya and they become closer. Hanna is now the queen bee thin and popular, but this comes with consequences she is again batteling bulima, due to the stress of trying to keep her queen bee status. Spencer is continuing her long standint rivalry with her sister Melissa, they fight for everything boys, grades and to be the apple of their parents eyes. Problems occur when Spencer starts to have feelings for Melissa's boyfriend Wren Kim
- Throughout the story, the liars recieve threatining messages from an unknown source who associates itself with the letter -A. They reveal secrets of the past and present, including an event they would much rather forget, which the girls refer to as 'The Jenna Thing'.
- At first they believe the messages are from Alison, who is still missing, but are stunned when they discover the police have found her corpse in the family gazebo of her former house.
- The book ends with the liars getting a text at Alison's Funeral saying, "I'm still here bitches. And i know everything. -A"
